Workshop Session Leaders and Titles:

Dr. James Bjornstad

• Responding to Oneness Pentecostals • Tape #0410
Oneness Pentecostals are distinguished by their unipersonal understanding of God in which Jesus Himself is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Additionally, their view of salvation involves faith, repentance, water baptism by immersion in the name of Jesus, and baptism in the Holy Spirit as evidenced by speaking in tongues. These beliefs and the support alleged for them will be evaluated by the biblical data.

• Scientology: Towards an Understanding and Assessment • Tape #0433
From Tom Cruise to John Travolta to Lisa Marie Presley, Scientology is a religion among prominent Hollywood stars. Given the way Scientology presents itself and the technical terminology it uses, many outside Scientology have found it difficult to comprehend this religion. This session will explain its development and basic worldview, while providing some assessment and response.

James Bjornstad is professor of Philosophy at Cedarville University (in Cedarville, Ohio) and executive director of the Institute of Contemporary Christianity. He serves on the boards of Personal Freedom Outreach, Evangelical Ministries to New Religions, and Wellspring Retreat and Resource Center. Jim has been researching world religions and contemporary religions in America for nearly 40 years.

Mrs. Joan C. Cetnar

• Are Seventh-day Adventists False Prophets? • Tape #0411
Some Evangelicals regard Seventh-day Adventists as “redeemed brethren and members of the body of Christ.” Yet, not all are willing to make such concessions. Are they God’s specific propagators of the Gospel for the last days? Or do members of the SDA church accept and believe questionable doctrine which places them outside the sphere of Orthodoxy? How do they view the writings of their church’s founder and prophetess, Ellen G. White? This session will explore and answer these and other vital questions.

• Reaching the Heart of a Jehovah’s Witness • Tape #0434
Jehovah’s Witnesses invest endless and laborious effort in order to try to receive “Jehovah’s approval” and enjoy God’s arrangement for eternal life. Yet, no amount of zealous service can ever earn them God’s approval (Ephesians 2:8-9). This workshop session will present a devotional approach to witnessing to Jehovah’s Witnesses and how they may find peace and merit with God through Jesus Christ.

Joan Cetnar is a former Jehovah’s Witness, and has, for nearly 40 years, educated the Church and general public regarding the cults, specifically Jehovah’s Witnesses. She is the hostess of the annual Witnesses Now for Jesus Convention and has spoken in churches, seminars, and conferences throughout the United States and in Japan. Joan serves on the Board of Directors of Personal Freedom Outreach.

Mr. David Clark

• Harold Camping, Family Radio, and the “Get out of the Church” False Teaching • Tape #0425
Harold Camping, the present president of Family Radio, has single-handedly declared that the Church Age has come to an end. He warns that all true bible believing Christians should leave their churches no matter how faithful to the Gospel their local church may be. Camping also teaches that the office of pastor, elder and deacon have ceased and the Holy Spirit has left the Church. This workshop will include a brief history of Harold Camping and Family Radio network. It will further provide sound biblical apologetics as a real source of understanding to meet the challenge that Family Radio and Harold Camping pose to the Church our Lord Jesus founded and He promised that the gates of hades would not prevail against it.

David Clark is a former cult member of the “Church of the Living Word,” also known as “The Walk.” He has attended Reformed Episcopal Seminary (Conservative Protestant Evangelical) and in 1981 he became a court certified cult expert designated by the court in two separate cult related litigation cases. Dave is a founding member of the national former cult member’s organization called FOCUS, and its current organization, re-FOCUS. He is a frequent lecturer at national and international conferences on cults and mind control and has been interviewed by the media worldwide as a cult expert working with families impacted by the cult phenomenon. Dave recently completed his third term as chairman of the missions committee of his local church in Pennsylvania.

Mr. Matthew Eppinette

• Pulling Plugs and Wonder Drugs • Tape #0417
Euthanasia, genetic intervention, stem cell research, cloning, and assisted reproduction are some of today’s most ethically complex medical topics. How should Christians approach and respond to these bioethical dilemmas? How do non-Christians approach these issues? This workshop will present a biblical framework for assessing health care ethics in contrast to non-theological ethical approaches prominent today.

Matthew Eppinette is a graduate student in Bioethics at Trinity International University and Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Ill. He is also a Research Assistant at The Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity in Bannockburn, Ill., and as half of an infertile couple, he has dealt with bioethical issues in his own life for several years.

Rev. G. Richard Fisher

• Experiencing God or Experiencing Mysticism? • Tape #0435
Charismatics are not alone in undermining the sufficiency of Scripture. Those who hail from a fundamental or conservative background may also find themselves exposed to teaching that causes them to drift from the safe mooring of Scripture. One of the leading exponents of non-Charismatic subjectivism is Southern Baptist Henry Blackaby and his hugely successful Experiencing God publications. This workshop will survey and respond to the mystical and extrabiblical leanings popularized by Blackaby in his best-selling volumes.

• Mystical Trends within Catholicism and Their Overlap into Evangelicalism • Tape #0412
Many cults flourish on the premise of restorationism. They convince their followers that the “Church” is not flourishing or conquering in the world because of departure from primitive beliefs and practice. They claim to offer a return to purity and power of an earlier time whether a new Pentecost or revival of some claimed era of power in Church history. There is a landslide in Catholicism to medieval mystics, mysticism and, unmediated direct access to God. This paradigm is inundating Evangelicalism through books and seminars. This session will explore this frightening development.

Richard Fisher is the senior researcher and writer for Personal Freedom Outreach’s newsletter publication, The Quarterly Journal. He has served as pastor of Laurelton Park Baptist Church in Bricktown, N.J., for over three decades. Dick is also a member of PFO’s Board of Directors, is the co-author of The Confusing World of Benny Hinn, and is a frequent guest on radio broadcasts nationwide.

Dr. Norman L. Geisler

• When Skeptics Ask • Tape #0436
Before we can share the Gospel, we sometimes have to smooth the road, remove obstacles, and answer the questions that are keeping that person from accepting the Lord. This workshop proceeds in question and answer format to cover all of the basic areas of attack on the Christian Faith. It includes answers to questions that skeptics ask about God, about miracles, about the Bible, about Christ, and about whether the Bible is the Word of God.

Norman Geisler is author or coauthor of some sixty books and hundreds of articles. He has taught at the university and graduate level for nearly forty-four years and has spoken, traveled, or debated in all fifty states and in twenty-five countries. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Loyola University and now serves as President of Southern Evangelical Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Rev. Gary E. Gilley

• Postmodernism and the Christian • Tape #0440
In the Western world, postmodernism has replaced modernism as the prevalent worldview. As a result, the dominant thinking now is a world in which absolute truth is nonexistent. Regrettably, postmodern philosophy has encroached on and impacted the Church as well. What exactly is postmodernism? What affect is postmodernity having on the Church? How are Christians to reach a postmodern world? These questions and more serve as the basis for this workshop.

• This Little Church Went to Market • Tape #0402
In an effort to draw “sellout” crowds, is the modern Church in danger of “selling out”? While seeker-sensitive adherents defend marketing as a tool to reach the unchurched, their methods are tragically creating a Church which exists merely to meet one’s needs. This workshop will present a biblical overview of the market-driven church philosophy, especially in relationship to the gospel message.

Gary Gilley has been pastoring at Southern View Chapel for over 28 years. He is author of two books, “I Just Wanted More Land”– Jabez and This Little Church Went to Market. He also writes the monthly study paper, Think on These Things which examines important contemporary theological issues.

Dr. Robert L. Griffin

• Has His Kingdom Come? • Tape #0413
This session will include an introduction to biblical teachings on the concept of the Kingdom and an overview of the roots and teachings of systems that fall into the “Dominionism/Reconstructionism/Kingdom Now” movements. We will take note of some of the proponents and/or apologists for those positions, and will observe their influences beyond their own adherents.

Robert Griffin has served as pastor of Parker Road Baptist Church since 1992. He earned his Doctor of Ministry from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1973. His ministry opportunities include preaching, teaching, mission trips, and Bible Camp direction throughout the world. Bob served as the Executive Director of Bible Memory Association International from 1977-1989. He currently serves on PFO’s Board of Directors and on the Board of Trustees for the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Rev. Bill Honsberger

• Cult Proofing Your Kids • Tape #0437
From Saturday morning cartoons to full-length films (including Disney) to classrooms all across the country, 21st-century children are swamped with paganism in all its various forms. This workshop will provide effective tools to prepare parents and their children for the onslaught of cultic, new age, and occultic beliefs that they will encounter in our day and age. Examples and methods of pagan evangelism will also be discussed and responded to.

Bill Honsberger is the director of Haven Ministries, a mission organization specializing in ministry and evangelism to new age, cultic movements, and world religions. He has a B.A. and an M.A. in systematic theology from Denver Seminary, and is nearing completion of his Ph.D. at the University of Denver. Bill and his wife, Terri, and their eight children live in Centennial, Co.

Rev. Clete Hux

• Creflo Dollar – Christian Celebrity or Charismatic Gnostic? • Tape #0418
During the past several years, Creflo Dollar, pastor of the Atlanta-based World Changers Church International, has ascended to a place of significant prominence as a televangelist and conference speaker. Dollar, a Word Faith teacher and disciple of Kenneth Copeland, has become perhaps the most bold proponent in the Faith camp with his erroneous theological and anthropological views. This workshop will examine his views of God and man and scripturally respond to his proof-texting for identifying Christians as “little gods.”

Clete Hux serves on the staff of the Apologetics Resource Center based in Birmingham, Ala. Previously, Clete was Associate Director for Watchman Fellowship (Birmingham) and pastored churches in Alabama and South Carolina. He was ordained by the Presbyterian Church in America and remains a Teaching Elder in the Evangel Presbytery of Alabama. He is a graduate of Birmingham Theological Seminary and Mississippi College. He has taught Systematic Theology and Apologetics at Birmingham Theological Seminary and has been a visiting teaching professor at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Miss., and at Westminster Theological College in Perth and Brisbane, Australia.

Rev. Robert S. Liichow

• Crossing Over or Being Double-Crossed: A Look at John Edward • Tape #0438
John Edward has gained quite a following in the United States and abroad due to his television program “Crossing Over” and appearances on broadcasts such as Larry King Live. On these programs, Edward purports to bring messages from dead family members to individuals in the viewing audience. Is it possible to communicate with the dead? And what message is Edward proclaiming via these broadcasts? This workshop will examine Edward’s claims and biblically refute them.

• The “Generals” of Pentecostalism • Tape #0414
Several books have been authored regarding the “Generals” of the Pentecostal movement. These works claim that the leaders of their movement are exemplary Christians in word and deed. This session will take a closer look at the lifestyles and beliefs of some of the major figures of Pentecostalism including: Edward Irving, John A. Dowie, A.A. Allen, William Branham, Fox Parham, Kenneth Hagin, and others. The truth about these so-called “Generals” will be eye-opening.

Robert Liichow is the founder of Discernment Ministry International (DMI), a prolific writer, and conference speaker. He received his master’s degree from Michigan Theological Seminary and is presently an adjunct professor at MTS, teaching on cults and world religions. Bob is a former Word of Faith teacher, Charismatic extremist, and a graduate of Robert Tilton’s Bible School.

Mrs. Lorri MacGregor

• The “Christianizing” of the Martial Arts • Tape #0403
Many churches have adopted the martial arts as a children’s program and outreach to the community. However, can martial arts really be separated from their Eastern roots? Are parents unknowingly setting their children up to have an Eastern, New Age mind set? There will be a brief overview of the martial arts, and then a specific look at Tae Kwon Do, the most popular adaptation into the Christian community.

• Generational Curses and Demons Everywhere! • Tape #0426
Extreme churches are just a hotbed of dealing with demons. Followers are encouraged to undergo “deliverance” at almost every meeting. Add to this, the teaching of “generational curses,” and you have the person scrambling to make sure every ancestor’s left-over curses affecting their own lives are dealt with — over and over. Some Scriptures are used, but are they in context or twisted? We will review what the Bible really teaches concerning demons and curses. Into this murky demonic mix are added humanistic teachings like self-esteem, and inner healing. What is happening to “Christian counseling?” We need to be informed.

Lorri MacGregor with her husband, Keith, founded in 1979, MacGregor Ministries, a Canadian Countercult Discernment Ministry. They have researched, written, and co-produced six videos dealing with Jehovah’s Witnesses, Seventh-day Adventists, and the counterfeit Christianity found in some Churches. They also have written and produced numerous booklets, tracts, and audio tapes on the subject of the cults and aberrant Christianity. They have a quarterly magazine, as well as maintain two web sites with information on the cults.

Mr. Bill McKeever

• The Journal of Discourses: LDS Opinions or 19th-Century Mormon Dogma? • Tape #0441
The twenty-six-volume set known as the Journal of Discourses is a work exclusive to the Mormon church. Yet it is the Latter-day Saints themselves who are often the worst critics of the Journal of Discourses. What exactly is contained within the pages of the 26 volumes? Who is behind its publication? Can Mormons easily dismiss its contents? If not, why do they try to do so? The answers to these questions will provide the framework for this workshop.

• Troublesome Passages from Mormon Scripture • Tape #0415
It is not uncommon for Latter-day Saints to insist that Mormonism can only be judged by its four standard works, the Bible, The Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and The Pearl of Great Price. Does this really help their case? In this study we will explore some of the more troubling passages in Mormon scripture to see if it is consistent with Christian teaching.

Bill McKeever is the founder and director of Mormonism Research Ministry, a missionary/apologetics organization based near Salt Lake City, Utah, that has been challenging the claims of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1979. Bill is the author of Answering Mormons’ Questions and co-author of Questions to Ask Your Mormon Friend and Mormonism 101.

Ms. Marcia Montenegro

• Harry Potter: Good Reading for Children? • Tape #0442
The controversy over the best-selling Harry Potter books and blockbuster motion pictures continues. This workshop will explore the various views of Harry Potter, and discuss the issue of occultism in connection to the books’ (and movies’) messages. The Harry Potter phenomenon will also be considered in light of fantasy fiction.

• Tool Time: The Tools and Devices of the Occult • Tape #0416
How do people use Tarrot cards? Is the Ouija Board just a game? What are Runes? A former astrologer will explain the most popular tools of the occult, such as crystal balls, tarot cards, an astrological chart, etc., and how they are used as a focus for the occultist. Also discussed will be whether these can be used for fun, and how these tools are tied into the occult.

Marcia Montenegro, who trusted Christ in December 1990, is a former professional astrologer, past president of the Metropolitan Astrological Society, and taught astrology for over five years. She was also involved for a number of years in psychic development, and in various Eastern, New Age and occult beliefs. She now has a ministry, Christian Answers for the New Age (CANA), and is an off-campus student at Southern Evangelical Seminary, Charlotte, NC. Marcia is a member of Cherrydale Baptist Church.

Mr. Ralph O. Muncaster

• Dismantling Evolution: Proof of Creation • Tape #0427
Exciting new discoveries now allow scientists to literally prove the impossibility of evolution. This presentation reviews the latest findings from the depths of outer space, to breakthroughs in molecular biology. Myths are exposed and creation, just as outlined in the Bible, is proven using the same statistical methods used to prove many other phenomena.

• Evidence for Jesus • Tape #0404
Cults and world religions believe Jesus was merely a teacher or a prophet; or even just a myth — but not the Son of God. Examine the abundance of hard evidence that indicates the existence of Jesus, and verifies the biblical account of the Resurrection. This presentation is a journey through time presenting archaeological, historical, philosophical, and statistical evidence that Jesus was who He claimed to be.

Ralph Muncaster was once a Fortune 500 advertising executive, an atheist and a skeptic of the Bible. Then a challenge inspired an intensive biblical research campaign which resulted in Muncaster becoming a Christian. Now he is a full time author and speaker and has written 25 books on a broad range of Christian apologetics topics. In addition to writing and speaking, he has taught Christian apologetics at the university level and founded Strong Basis to Believe, a ministry devoted to helping people with their belief struggles.

Dr. Ronald Nash

• Is Jesus the Only Savior? A Critique of Evangelicals Who Have Lost Their Way on This Issue • Tape #0428
Can salvation be imparted to man apart from repentance and faith in Jesus Christ? A growing number of Evangelicals think so and are claiming it’s not necessary to know about or believe in Jesus to be saved. This workshop will examine the most serious weaknesses of this unbiblical position.

• Open Theism: Does God Know the Future? • Tape #0419
Open theism teaches that future human actions cannot be known by God. Does God know the future or is He merely a good guesser? Is the issue of God’s foreknowledge a subject settled within the pages of Holy Writ or one open to debate? This workshop will explore these questions, as well as examine the key proponents of modern day open theism, why they believe it, and why they are wrong.

Ronald Nash is Professor of Philosophy at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He was for many years head of a philosophy and religion department at a large state university. Dr. Nash has lectured around the world including Russia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, China, New Zealand and Great Britain. He is the author of more than 35 books including Life’s Ultimate Questions, Faith and Reason, Worldviews in Conflict, and Is Jesus the Only Savior?

Dr. Robert A. Peterson

• Conditionalism: Hell is Under Fire • Tape #0429
Opponents of eternal punishment, including some evangelical Christians, are putting forth competing views challenging the historic view of hell. But what does God’s Word actually tell us about those who do not turn to Christ for salvation? This workshop will present a biblical refutation of the main arguments for conditionalism (annihilationism), the view that the wicked will ultimately be destroyed by God and will exist no more.

• Postmortem Evangelism: A Chance After Death? • Tape #0405
Will God provide saving grace after death for the unevangelized? One proponent of that view states, “God does not cease to be gracious to sinners just because they are no longer living.” Does such an idea square with Scripture or does it convey a false hope? This session will present a biblical refutation of the concept that at least some human beings will be given opportunity after death for salvation.

Robert Peterson is Professor of Systematic Theology at Covenant Theological Seminary in Saint Louis. He formerly taught Theology and New Testament at Biblical Theological Seminary in Hatfield, Pa., and has pastored several churches in Pennsylvania. Robert earned a B.S. from Philadelphia College of Bible, an M.Div. from Biblical Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in historical theology from Drew University. He has authored (or coauthored) several publications, including Hell on Trial: The Case for Eternal Punishment, Two Views of Hell: A Biblical and Theological Dialogue, Getting to Know John’s Gospel: A Fresh Look at Its Main Ideas, and Adopted by God: From Wayward Sinners to Cherished Children.

Dr. Ron Rhodes

• Reasoning from the Scriptures with Catholics • Tape #0443
The Roman Catholic Church claims to be the one true Christian church. However, there are crucial and important issues that separate Catholics from evangelical Christians. This workshop will examine what Catholics believe about the apocrypha, tradition, papal infallibility, salvation, sacramentalism, and the exaltation of Mary. Biblical responses will be provided in each case, and tips on dialoguing with Catholics will be provided throughout.

• Reasoning from the Scriptures with Muslims • Tape #0420
Because of the phenomenal growth of Islam around the world, many Muslims argue that this constitutes proof that Islam is the true religion. After all, how could the religion grow so rapidly without God’s blessing? This workshop will investigate the Quran versus the Bible, Muhammad versus Jesus, and Allah versus the God of the Bible. Also covered in briefer fashion will be the Muslim versus the Christian views on sin, salvation, and the afterlife. Witnessing tips will be offered throughout.

Ron Rhodes is the founder and president of Reasoning from the Scriptures Ministries, a Frisco, Texas-based apologetic ministry. He is heard regularly on nationwide radio and is the author of over three dozen works, including The Challenge of the Cults and New Religions, The Complete Book of Bible Answers, and the heralded Reasoning from the Scriptures with... series. Ron holds a Th.M. and a Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary.

Dr. R. Philip Roberts

• Rolling the Dice — Applying Pascal’s Wager to the Mormon Doctrine of Salvation • Tape #0430
The foundational message of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a restoration of the “fullness” of the Gospel and with it a complete understanding of salvation. This workshop will review the Mormon doctrine of salvation (soteriology) and present reasons why, if Mormonism were true, it is far better never to become a member of the LDS church.

• Why They Blow Themselves Up! — Understanding the Islamic Doctrine of Salvation • Tape #0439
On a near weekly basis, we are confronted with the fruit of Muslim teaching manifesting itself in suicide (or homicide) bombings. As the horror of these massacres make international headlines, many struggle to understand why. This workshop will explore the Islamic doctrine of salvation, its relationship to Jihad (Holy war), and give reasons why suicide is not only tenable within Islam, but preferred.

Phil Roberts is the president of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City. He formerly served as the director of the Interfaith Witness Department of the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. Phil received a Ph.D. in philosophy from the Free University of Amsterdam, an M.Div. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a B.A. from Georgetown College, with honors. He has authored or co-authored numerous works including books, video presentations, and magazine articles.

Rev. Mark Robinson

• Messianic Judaism: Doctrinal and Practical Problems • Tape #0431
Messianic Judaism is a popular movement within the United States and throughout the world which is comprised of Jewish converts to Christianity. This seminar will initially define Messianic Judaism and take a brief look at its history. Next, the doctrinal distinctives of the movement will be examined in light of Scripture. Finally, some of the practical aspects of Messianic Judaism and the problems that arise will be considered.

• Religious Deception in the Last Days • Tape #0444
The Scriptures warn that the last days will see a rise of “Christian” movements deceiving many (2 Timothy 3). This workshop will analyze from the Bible how these movements will use counterfeit miracles to deceive many. The session will also survey some statements and methods of present day leaders showing how they “fulfill” this prophecy of false Christians using counterfeit miracles to resist the truth.

Mark Robinson is the Director of Shalom Outreach Ministries in El Cajon, Calif., and is the editor of the ministry’s newsletter, Thy God Reigns. Mark has served in Jewish ministries for nearly three decades and has authored articles for such publications as Israel My Glory and Voice magazines.

Rev. Paul Scozzafava

• How to Defend the Trinity with Jehovah’s Witnesses • Tape #0421
This workshop is designed to lovingly present the Gospel to those wrapped up in Watchtower deceptions on the nature of God. The session will explore what Jehovah’s Witnesses are taught about the Trinity by defining terms, surveying examples of their Scripture twisting, and examining the quotations of non-Jehovah’s Witness writers found in their publications and used to support their anti-trinitarian position. Also presented will be how to share with them the truth of who God truly is as revealed in His Holy Word.

• Word of Faith and the Atonement • Tape #0406
The Word of Faith heresies continue to plague the body of Christ, especially when it comes to the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Teachers such as Creflo Dollar, Kenneth Copeland, Jesse Duplantis, Joyce Meyer, Marilyn Hickey, etc., continually proclaim that Jesus became demonic on the cross, suffered in hell and was born again. This session is designed to expose “word of Faith” teachers’ current heretical views of the Atonement. There will be a video/audio presentation to show, in context, the current word faith views on the atonement. This workshop will equip students to defend against these heresies.

Paul Scozzafava is senior pastor at Calvary of Sante Fe and formerly served as assistant pastor at Calvary of Albuquerque for 15 years. He has been involved in apologetic ministry work since 1985. Paul appears monthly on an apologetic radio program, “Ask the Pastor,” which is broadcast on a local Albuquerque radio station. He has also been featured on Christian Research Institute’s “Bible Answer Man” broadcast, taught apologetics at the Calvary School of Ministry Bible School for over 10 years, and participates in various debating arenas.

Rev. Charles N. Smith

• What to Say When Jehovah’s Witnesses Come to Your Door • Tape #0407
Nearly every Christian in America has experienced a doorstep encounter with members of the Watchtower Society. Yet, most Christians will allow a closed door, unkind words, or an incomplete testimony to be their witness when these misguided souls come calling. “I’m sorry, I have my own religion,” is not the most effective way to reach out to them. This workshop will present the “how” and “what” of sharing the real truth of God with Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Charles Smith was associated with the Watchtower Society for the first 38 years of his life. He served as a ministerial servant, pioneer and elder. Following the failure of the organization’s 1975 Armageddon prophecy, he began to question Watchtower truthfulness, and left the sect. His active Jehovah’s Witness wife divorced him after he was disfellowshipped. Following his conversion to Christianity, he serves as an Interfaith Outreach Associate, a Volunteer Home Missionary and is bi-vocational, serving as Pastor of a Southern Baptist Church in Bonne Terre, Mo. Charles has remarried and he and his wife lead a support group called Witness to Witness Ministries.

Dr. David M. Tyler

• The Church’s Fascination with Self-Esteem • Tape #0408
The Church today has become amazingly tolerant of aberrant teaching and outlandish ideas. At the same time the church has become intolerant of sound teaching. One such teaching that has influenced the church over the past twenty-five years is self-esteem. The self-esteem influence has so pervaded our society that it is no longer perceived as anything but the most familiar and acceptable way of thinking. If the advocates of self-esteem are right, then we must reform our theology. But if the advocates of self-esteem are wrong, then clearly the Church’s fascination with self-esteem is heretical. This workshop addresses the question: How do I respond biblically to a person who complains they have low self-esteem?

• When Sin is Called Sickness • Tape #0445
Paul commands Timothy to “instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines, nor pay attention to myths” (1 Timothy 1:3-4). What this apostolic order amounts to is to stop teaching anything that is not biblical. Could we apply this to counseling today? Absolutely! Where else can you find as many strange doctrines and myths? The disease-model of counseling that has infiltrated Christian thinking today has had a devastating effect on evangelism and the sanctification of believers. This workshop addresses the issue of calling sin sickness.

David Tyler, a native of Illinois has served as a pastor in Southern Baptist churches in Illinois and South Carolina. He holds a B.A. in Theology, an M.A. in Pastoral Ministry, and a Ph.D. in Biblical Counseling. Presently, David is the Director of Gateway Biblical Counseling and Training Center located at Edgemont Bible Church in Fairview Heights, Illinois. He is certified by the National Association of Nouthetic Counselors and the International Association of Biblical Counselors and lectures and leads workshops on Biblical Counseling.

Mr. Jim Valentine

• Witnessing to Masons: Keeping It Simple and Biblical • Tape #0422
Many Christians accept that the teachings of the Masonic Lodge do not fit into a biblical framework. However, few know how to dialogue with a Mason concerning key issues of Freemasonry which conflict with the Christian faith. This workshop will focus on “Blue Lodge” which is the entry level and most universal form of Masonry. The session will contrast the most authoritative written and uncoded materials of Freemasonry with the Bible.

Jim Valentine has served for over three decades in Christian ministry to non-Christian sects and religious movements (24 years have been in full-time service). He is the director of Christian Apologetics: Research and Information Service (CARIS). Jim’s ministry efforts expand worldwide, including mission trips to countries in the former Soviet Union. He and his wife, Kathy, reside in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Rev. L.L. (Don) Veinot, Jr.

• Bill Gothard: The Man After the Book • Tape #0446
How has Bill Gothard responded after the publication of A Matter of Basic Principles: Bill Gothard and the Christian Life? Modern Reformation magazine pointed out that “His teachings are characterized by an interpretation of Scripture that no other Christian organization shares.” We will look at these teachings, his attempt at damage control and the effects all of this has on his followers.

• Strange Doctrines • Tape #0423
Today, more than ever before in the history of the modern Church, “Christian” television and “Christian” bookstores place believers in great peril. How do we know what teachers and authors we should be listening to and what books we should be buying? Does media prominence and best-sellers constitute doctrinal purity? This session will examine the smorgasbord of “strange doctrines” currently being served to Christians, helping them to be better able to discern and endure sound doctrine.

Don Veinot is President of Midwest Christian Outreach, Inc. He has been actively involved in counter-cult ministry work since 1987. He is the co-author of A Matter of Basic Principles: Bill Gothard and the Christian Life. Don is a frequent guest on various radio and television broadcasts and with his wife, Joy, formerly co-hosted a weekly radio broadcast, “Defend the Faith.” He was ordained to the ministry by West Suburban Community Church of Lombard, Ill., where he served as interim pastor.
